I had hoped this blog as a way to earn some extra spending money - but PayPerPost has "caught on to me!" They have a new rule set up where I have to have a normal blog seperate my PayPerPost blogs.

Oh dear. Now ... I must rethink this whole deal. PayPerPost is going to have to up the ante I thinks for me to take the time to write all of these posts!

Virtual Office Hits The Real World

Back to My Virtual Office Dreams ....

Now .... I wrote a few days ago about opening up my own online business. I started thinking about the next steps. Taking that vitual buisness out into the real world - and opening up an office. How would I go about finding the perfect location?

Offic2share.com is the perfect serach engine for me to begin my hunt. Their main focus is for small business - like myself - locate shared office space - or short term leases. They help out the small business owner make that big leap from "Home Offfice" into a "Real Office".

They recently ran a contest called "Home Office From Hell" - which if I had known about I am sure that we would havec won!!! {well ... after I throw back in all the stuff I've now got piled all over the dinign room!} The prize was free rent for a year in actual office space! And guess what - they'll have a second contest in the fall! Maybe I WILL enter!?!

Yep - cowboys are an incredibly dangerous breed I have been told. Then why is it that all of the cowboys in movies are so yummily sexy?

When I was a young girl – the year we moved from Scotland back to the United States – we headed out West for a week on a Montana Ranch. I had my own horse – Whiskey. It was only my horse for a week – but I fell in love with him hard and fast. I imagine that being a cowboy – you feel the same way. You’re out in the open air – in beautiful surrounding mountains – just riding along on your horse. I believe they call it moseying along.

At that time I thought it would be really cool to be a Girl Cowboy – to go to rodeos – to live the fast and dangerous life of the wild west. I went through my Billy The Kid stage – and was really into the romantic Villans of the West. Funny thing is – I’ve never actually been to a rodeo. So … today I decided to look one up and came across the Houston Rodeo!

This looks like a ton of fun! The concerts alone are worth the price of the Season Ticket! Sherly Crow, Maroon 5 and Lonestar as well as a ton of your Country Favorites – Toby Keith for one It’s three weeks of the best athletes in professional riding - all sheltered within the Houston Astrodome! The event started in 1931, and is kicked off every year with a parade through Downtown Houston.

The Houston Rodeo is consistently as the world's largest rodeo—in events, entertainers and spectators—and drawing top competitors searching for a piece of the world's largest regular season purse.

Now this …. This rodeo is the stuff that little girls {and big cowboys} dream of!

To Slide - or Not To Slide...

I think that I'm the only person in the world who has never eaten a "Slider".

You know what I'm talking about - right? Those little tiny hamburgers from White Castle. They are in the shape of a square and are on a bun that looks more like a dinner roll. There's lots of diced onions on top - so I have to imagine that these things taste wonderful!

Still Looking For The Perfect Job!

If you've read my Main Blog {www.willosweb.com/blog} then you'll know that I've been searching for a job for the past 11 months. Sure ... I took a few months here and there to help out with family emergencies - but it has been a total of 11 months since I last had a real job.

There's a new website available - A New Job - for job seekers with a new approach. The employers can post FREE job listings, and access employee residents and no charge. This is great - because it give the HR person an opportunity to review ALL the resumes - and not just do a hit or miss search on "keywords". They may be able to find my "diamond in the rough" resume and see that - hey - she may not have the exact experienec we wanted - but she's good!

The twist though, is that the employee has to pay a one time fee if hired by a company that utilizes this web site. While no one should have to pay a fee in order to find a job - I think that this might be worth it. If it means having an advantage over other candidates - that the HR personal are going to see my full resume rather than a snippet - I say sign me up!

This next product will be great for my TV friends who are trying to find a better way to steam their video live to the internet. Please don't ask me any technical specifications on this product ... I don't know how it works. I'm just posting about it here so YOU can do the homework and find out if it will work for your needs or not.

epiphan Systems has developed a dual mode frame grabber than can broadcast high quality images and video to the internet from any sort of device with a USB connection and monitor. The best part is no PCI is needed - which eliminates that quality reduction you typically get when transferring graphically.

I almost wish I had this product when I was creating my video for the Biggest Loser. While my quality was pretty clean – there were some spots that became pretty pixilated when I uploaded the video to putfile.com . ALSO – for my TV friends – this makes making your Demo Reel that much easier! No need to “borrow” the station equipment – you can do your own dubs at home and wind up with better quality than if you had dubbed on the tired equipment in master control. The epiphan systems web site is all a bit too technical for me … but I am sure there are photogs out there who would eat this type of device up!!

The DVI2USB uses the USB port to capture output from virtually any VGA or DVI source - such as a Windows PC, Macintosh OSX, Unix machine, and more. It then broadcasts these images over public, private or broadband wireless networks, enabling remote almost instantaneous shots streamed live via the internet. Laptop or TV - why not both?

I've been looking for a tray table of sorts to use for my laptop while watching TV. Currently I'm sitting my bum on the floor at the cofee table - and let me tell you - that is NOT comfortable AT ALL! Well .. I think I've found the answer!

Podcasting For N00bs

I've been doing this blog thing for a while now - and have always wondered how to get into Podcasting. How it all works is beyond me - I don't even OWN an iPod!

But now-I found a website that will allow me to listen to Podcasts online! I don't need an iPod to tune in to my favorite broadcasts. It's a new website called Pluggd.com - I can search the site for podcasts that interest me, subscribe to the casts that I want to keep on listening to, and add new podcasts to my playlist whenever they become availble.

And my favorite part - the critic in me just loves this - I can REVIEW the podcasts and share my opinions with the rest of the Pluggd.com community! There's even a RSS feed to automatically update my blogs with the review - I don't even have to type it in twice.

This is a really cool site!

Road Trip - Asheville, NC

My son and I are planning our next road trip - we're headed to the Biltmore Estates in Asheville, NC. When I started planning the trip - I really had no idea where we wanted to go. I found a great web site for Vacation Rental homes - at Zip Vacations {The Biltmore Inn at $1000 a night was to much for my pocket book!}.

The site was easy to use and had literally thousands of Vacation Home Rental property listings from around the world. It was easy to navigate - I didn't have to sift though HUNDREDS of rental directors and lisitings. I could enter the exact criteria for the type of property that suited my son and I best. Then their site did the rest. If you're planning a vacation this summer - I'd give it a try. Vacation Rentals usually end up saving you more money than staying at a hotel.

The Easter Bunny Is Coming To Town

A few years ago I discovered the local Union Rescue Mission seeking donations of Easter Baskets for the kids living at their Womens & Childrens home. We as a society are very generous when it comes to the Decemer Holiday Season - but we often forget other times of the year. When I came across this request I thought it was the perfect project to get the employees at my current company involved with - and we ended up putting together about 40 baskets for the shelter.

When I left that company the next year I continued to provide baskets for the shelter - with this year as no exception. I put together 10 baskets over the weekend and am getting ready to drop them off today.

People always ask me why I chose this Easter donation when I'm not a very religious person. I tell them it's for the kids - I still believe that kids need to have magic in their lives. What could be more magical than a Giant Bunny hopping around the world with baskets filled with candy?

Also - I was once a single mom. I could have ended up living in a homeless shelter myself - but thank goodness my parents were around to help me out. I can't imagine what life is like for some of these women - these families - who find themselves in need of help. I have met people in life - not so nice people - who feel that anyone living in a homeless shelter deserve to be there. That they have mental issues or drug problems. They've forgotten about the families that lost their jobs due to mass lay-offs; the families who have experienced major medical issues and lost everything to pay outrageous medical bills; the women who were abused and fled their homes - their lives - in order to protect their children.

And I enjoy making up the baskets - my own son is to old to appreciate the Easter Bunny. Perhaps I'm extending the magic of the holiday for myself - but that's OK. The fact that I put my heart and soul into creating the baskets makes them just a little more special. My only regret is that I can't see the faces of the kids when they discover the Easter Bunny has arrived. Maybe the first normal thing to happen to them since they arrived at the shelter.

You should look around your own community to see how you can help out. If there are no projects near you - look around the internet. I stumbled across Rosie O'Donnels web site last night - after her appearance on the Tonight Show. She has a great non-profit organization called For All Kids that could use some help.

Biggest April Fools Joke Ever - I'm still blushing

Something tragically embarrassing yet completely hilarious happened to me today. I belong to a community that has a very active Home Owners Association. It was announced in the monthly magazine that Management had decided to spend $5.2 million on a Capital Improvement project connecting several of the lakes to allow for boating.

The lakes happened to be behind my home and when I read the article I was livid. I sat down and wrote a lenghty letter detailing my distress and anger over this decision - and sent it out to not only the Board - but several news outlets {you know - tv stations and newspapers)

I continue reading the rest of the neighborhood magazine and come across one that was titled "APRIL FOOL's". Yes - the entire lake connection thing was a farce and I just became the biggest butt of their joke.

I immediately sent out a retraction to the media saying I had fallen for a twisted April Fool's joke by the management and apologized for taking their time. THEN - I sent an e-mail to the management with a huge "APRIL FOOL's" followed by "Not a nice joke, now is it?"

Hopefully it made them all sweat a bit to think the news had been contacted. The embarrassment over the situation I feel - I won't be able to show my face around the neighborhood for months!

I am a closet Monkees Fan. Yes - to this day I still sing my FAVORITE Monkees song in the shower - and I have a crush on the young Micky Dolenz.

I think my obsession started when we first moved to the United States from Scotland. There are three televesion shows I remember watching for the first time. They are: The Price Is Right, The Monkees and The Bannana Splits!

Even when I was young I had an obsession with music - so seeing two televison shows back to back on Saturday mornings about music was the best thing in the world to me!

The comedy in the two shows were enough to cause giggle fits in this little girl - and not only did my love for music grow - but I grew a love for all things from the 60's! I guess I should admit that I'm a closet hippie too - a peace loving beatnic!

I found the lyrics to my favorite Monkees song this moring - thought'd i'd post them here because they do fit the tone of our world today. It's time for us to stop killing, bring our soliders home, and just love one another -

I Talk Too Much!

Yes - MY blog has been reviewed by the ladies over at iTalk2much.com . While they gave me a measly 1 Slap - I decided to make them my Friday Featured artists.

Constructive Criticism is an artform - yet many critics never receive the respect that they deserve from their readers. The ladies at i Talk too much seem to have a good fan base - and I've received hundreds of hits on my blog even though I was reviewed poorly. Though I did find their comments lacked any constructive criticism at all during my review - nothing I could take to the drawing board and build upon - I have seen some good comments on other blogs that would help the budding blogger do a good redesign of their site.

What is i Talk too much? It is basically a blog written by a handful of women with too much free time on their hands! The naive blogger can submit their blog for review by the ladies in hopes for the coveted 5 slaps! Most recently - the sites receiving 5 slaps seem to be the ones that come up "Site Not Found" and "404 Error" - what does that tell you about their critic methods?

I submitted my site about a month ago for review - and it was then I decided to find a new template. Unable to find anything that fit my personality readily available - I decided to tackle a design myself. Well - apparently that was a HUGE mistake - which is why you are now looking at a generic blog template! I'm currently teaching myself CSS/HTML/XHTML - have purchased a new domain - and hope to have a brand new killer web site and blog up and running within another month.

Oh ... yeah - this review isn't about ME! I forgot - as do the ladies at i Talk too much. Though the reviews they offer are typically spot on - they do tend to talk about themselves just as often in their reviews as they do the web site they are reviewing. Which is sometimes a complete turn-off. Yet their fan base seems to enjoy every word.

I do give them props for coming up with a brilliant MARKETABLE blog. They have great money making potential there - but from all appearances it seems they are not taking advantage of that. Which is OK! For the true artists - it isn't about the money. It's about the art. And the art of critique these ladies have down pat!

I give them a 4 out of 5 on the Friday Featured artist scale. Sorry ladies - it would have been a complete 5 if you had offered something constructive in my review - rather just than saying the color scheme was bad. I do disagree with you on my writing - sometimes you have to read past the first entry to see what a blog is all about.

The Final "Reveal"

For those of you reading my blog for the latest information on the Biggest Loser casting - well - there isn't going to be anymore news. That's right - I quit! I will no longer be the secret go-between for possible candidates and the public. Sorry to disappoint.

Here is everything that I know as of this moment - and that's it. You'll get nothing more from me - I am moving on and I hope that you do too:

#1 – information was shared in the chat room by several BL participants. You could have read the information yourself by entering the chat room and typing the command /show 1000 - that would have brought up the last 1000 messages in the room. The chat room only saves 96 hours – so it may be too late to read it. {People - seriously - don't disclose information in public chat rooms or on message forums! If I found the information easily - so could anyone else!
You are hurting yourself AND the production of the show.}

#2 – I received an anonymous e-mail via my blog – asking about an e-mail that was sent out by 3 Ball last week. It was a friend of a contestant who was concerned – and wanted to try and find out more information for her. She asked what I knew – so I mentioned the BL forum chat. {This was a public chat room – I felt it was OK to mention it}. The friend contacted me again a few days later saying that the possible contestant was flying out on April 8^th – and asked me to keep my fingers crossed for her.

#3 – let’s see if I can remember anything else ….. chatter around the message boards is that the men are already in California – but the ladies were flying out on or after April 5^th – which is what I was ‘confirming’ in my post on the GOYFB webiste.

#4 – several forum posters have PM’d me and said “I’m in the finals” – but I really have no clue who they are in real life – so I wouldn’t consider their information to be 100% truthful. I've asked each of them to display a specific item if they make it on the show - and that is the only way I'll know if they make it.

#5 – I decided on Sunday that I would no longer post information on my blog – or on the forums – regarding casting. Why – because (1) If someone who is indeed a finalist tells me – then I’m obligated to inform 3 Ball. I don’t want to be the person that causes another to lose their spot as a finalist. (2)I am seriously interested in the production process of a reality show – I would one day like to be able to talk to someone about it – and if I continue acting as everyone’s go-between to post ‘secret information’ – I’m only hurting myself. {Note - after my auction blog I stopped asking questions. People came to me with thier information and stated it was OK to post it. This is the only reason I continued.} (3) I’ve worked in TV and I know when it’s time to be quiet – when it starts costing the production.

That’s it. That is all I know. Sure – I have my own list of suspected forum members who are finalists – but I haven’t shared that information with anyone. And I can assure you I won’t be spilling any more beans – whether from a ‘mole’ or other forum members. I quit being everyone’s go to gal!

However - I will listen to you in private! If you need someone to talk to - let me know and be assured it will be kept just between us. Again - I'm researching the production process of reality shows - from the inital casting call to the finale edit - and any input offered would be welcome.

A New Villian In Town

My husband has taken on a new hobby of sorts. He's working with a friend in creating a web comic based on their City of Heros and City of Villans characters. It's really pretty good - actually. Hubby is writing the stories and his friend is creating the comic characters. So far they've turned out pretty fabulous - and I can't wait to see the final comics when the pieces are all put togther.

The basic platform is a 9 panel comic - again - hubby is writing the actual story line and his friend is drawing those stories into comic format. I've included here a pencil sketch of the character that inspired the web comic - Ze Annoying Frenchie. While I'd like to put up one of the actual final characters - I have been asked to wait till a few of the comics are ready to go online. As soon as I'm given the go ahead - you can be sure that this latest web comic duo will be a "Friday Featured Artist".

Good Grief!

It's funny how it hits you - just out of the blue and so suddenly.

Grief.

We were driving down the street yesterday - home from Border's bookstore - when we pulled over to allow a funeral procession pass us by. I just started to cry. I hadn't done that since I learned my Uncle would die from cancer in January. I didn't even know I would still feel so sad about his death.

It hits you like a shockwave -you don't even see it coming. You're having a normal conversation about something in your everyday life - and WHAM! - it's there and it hurts so bad. Right in the heart - the gut. You try to surpress the tears - so people don't think you're insane - but that just makes them worse. So you have to polietly explain what happened - laugh away the tears.

It has been brought to my attention that there is an error viewing this blog in Internet Explorer. Apparently you will not see the header or the background colors. Since I am new to coding it may take me awhile to figure out what I've done wrong - I basically just changed my header and changed the background color. I'll be looking into it more this week and hope to have the site fully functional and viewable soon.

Career Search Update

It's about time for another wonderful Job Search update - don't you think??

What's going on .... well .... last Tuesday - 11 days ago - I had my interview with the BIG boss at the newspaper. It went smoothly and discovered that we had some friends in common. She had a list of questions prepared - and I answered to the best of my ability. I really HATE talking about myself and you would think by now I"d have these interviews down pat. BUT - it's hard to be put on the spot and respond to questions that come out of the blue! I called my HR rep yesterday for an update - who said the last of 4 candidates was interviewed yesterday afternoon and they hope to have a decision and make an offer next week.

I have an interview with Broadway Across American scheduled for Friday of next week. Oh I would love this job too - can we say FREE TICKETS TO EVERY SHOW!!!!! I'd be in sheer heaven. However -if I'm offered the newspaper job before this inteview - I'll need to call and see if we can bump up the interview. If the BAA job pays more - then it would be smart to put off the newspaper a few days - right?

This has been my situation since August I'm begining to see a definite pattern. Have an interview - get hopes up - hear nothing - schedule an even better interview - previous interview was a NO - go to better interview - get hopes up - hear nothing - schedule a fantastic interview ....

Let's hope that cycle ends soon!!!!

Blog Updates Nearing Completion

As you can see I've been busy attempting some graphic updates on my blogs. I hope to have all the graphic elements in place by the end of today! Woo Hoo! And then there will be no further changes until I get tired of this color scheme.

Thank you for your patience during this transitional period - it's been fun learning how to manipulate the standard blogger templates. I hope to teach myself more on template design and coding - but that will come in play at another date!

One thing you may notice is a slight name change. I decided to merge a few of my online personas into one Shining Star! Yes - Willo Keays is the psudeonym I use for writing, andI thought it was time to bring her forth into the public spotlight. So - say goodbye to all those screen names of the past - and embrace your new friend - WILLO!

"Moles Are EVERYWHERE!"

The more time I hang out at the Biggest Loser forum, the more interesting things people tell me. It's not as if I'm asking for details - they just send them to me! It's crazy! For example, I received a PM from someone I've never spoken with - EVER - that stated the finalists were chosen AGES ago. Then another forum member told me that her contact said pretty much the exact same thing!

Here's a summary of the conversation from "KAV" - a suspected Casting employee:

All the cast has already been chosen - this happened BEFORE the final interviews. The final interviews were a way to make sure the chosen ones passed the medical exam - and if they didn't pass the Casting Directors still had other candidates to fall back on .

When asked if casting were still looking for women - since the date for women to head to the ranch had been set back till April 5th when the men leave March 24th - KAV stated that all the people were already picked and notified for the show and went on about the final interview being the medical forms and background check.

So ... basically 3 Ball has had the cast finalized for awhile now - that everyone selected already knows they made the show.
Finally, there are several people on the Biggest Loser forum, as you may know, that have received this information. "Moles are everywhere."

MOLES ARE EVERYWHERE? What the heck - is she trying to scare us?! Or is she warning us to stay away from these so called "moles". Perhaps this too is all a bunch BS to create "buzz" around the show. Who Knows!

I'll continue to listen to what everyone has to say - but I would be VERY INTERESTED in hearing from someone at 3 Ball and/or NBC regarding the casting process. Heck - I'd love to see the entire Reality TV Production process from start to end - what a fascinating study of mankind. Even us non-chosen ones are still part of the game!! I guess we have to decide if we want to continue to be used as pawns - or take ourselves out of the game. As long as people are asking me to spread the word - and other people are coming here to read about it - I'll keep playing! For now - it's a really fun game to play. Maybe even I'm a "mole"?

Custom Blog Software or Book Recomendations?

I am looking for a book or software product that will allow me to generate custom blog templates and teach me the coding necessary to host a blog at my own web site rather than Blogger.

For those who blog - or even any tech guys out there - do you know of such software or books that you could recommended?

While I'm looking for a job I'm hoping to be able to learn as much as possible so that I can design some custom templates and if I get good enough offer design services to other bloggers.

Creating Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Have you ever felt like you're being used to create BUZZ about a certain show? Do you think reality programs like American Idol or the Biggest Loser count on 'water-cooler' discussions to keep the show at the top of the ratings? What about LOST and Desperate Housewives - was their popularity built upon the fan reactions and almost instant discussions that took place upon the completion of each and every episode on the internet?

I do.

In fact - I believe that the LOST writers discovered the weakness of their fan base - and is now exploiting it in some of the writing to generate and FEED these discussions.

Why do I think that? Well - the writers of the show have started introducing "Fan Theories" into the writing. For example - Hurley and Libby's discussion about the modern washer & dryer in Bunker #1. This was one of the first things LOST fans spoke of after the bunker was open - if all the other technology in the bunker is 1970's era - why have a GE Duet Washer & Dryer from 2005?

I also believe that hired 'moles' continue to post on the Biggest Loser forum in an attempt to create buzz about the casting process and the show. Most recently - a few new members to the forum bumping up old threads regarding casting - and asking about the finalization of the cast. I've even been fed information by some of these newbies in an attempt to generate buzz. That's right - I and a few other select and boisterous members of the forum are being targeted with false information in hopes that we'll write about it on the forum.

It almost makes you feel special. I almost fell for it too - then spoke with another forum member who had experienced the same mis-information. Little bits and pieces dropped along the path in hopes we'd put one & one together and post the information publicly. When comparing notes we realized we'd been duped!

On other message boards and forums you can spot the 'paid posters.' Paid posters are those annoying trolls who hop onto a forum with messages like "Did you see the newest episode of LOST - if not go to this web site and see a full re-cap of the show!" and "I heard John Doe was up for an Oscar - head over to this web site for all the info!" NBC found a way to keep the buzz and chatter going without paying anyone - simply by planting specific people on the forum to keep feeding false information to trusted and well liked forum members.

It's actually a brilliant tactic - something I would have utilized myself had I been a paid Promotions team member. In fact - if anyone is hiring for such position - I'm still looking for a job! Wouldn't it be fantastic if someone actually paid me to blog and post on forums? Then the time I spent online would be truly justified!

My Very First Poem - Ever

I wrote this poem last week when I was in a rotten mood. I didn't share it then because I knew people would be concerned after they read it. But - it's the first poem I've written and I would like to share it. Keep in mind, it was written in a moment of anger, it's a poem and is meant to be dramatic, and that I'm feeling much better now. {Mom - this means it's JUST A POEM}:

I sit here with no joy, only sorrow

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

In the year 432 AD, Bishop Patrick arrived in Ireland to convert the Pagans to Christianity. Upon his death, Patrick became the Patron Saint of Ireland due to his work with the Irish people. There are many stories surrounding St. Patrick, most of which relate to why St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17th.

In Ireland, February and March hold the worst weather. March 17th marked the end of this cold weather and the beginning of the farming season. The Irish people, wanting to have a good time after a long harsh winter, would take a break from Lent to celebrate with feasts and MUCH drinking.

This overindulgence of the original celebration of St. Patrick's Day is evident today. Celebrants often drink beer, dress in green clothing and search for four leafed clovers. Everyone becomes a little Irish on St. Patty's Day! This holiday has changed very little, never straying far from the original intent of the celebration. The only change took place when Christian society adapted this Pagan ritual by simply naming the holiday after one of the Countries favorite spiritual icons.

I’m not going to share all the details – but I received an e-mail message from my contact at 3 Ball this morning. He opened with a statement that he was disappointed in my blog article – the fact that I had detailed our conversations. He felt I made the auctions sound shady when the intent was to raise money for the Children’s Athletic Fund. For some reason he got the impression that I was saying the casting process was itself tainted – and that these types of twists are the norm for a reality show. He also went on to defend his choice of allowing the 5^th auction ‘winner’ to pay outside of the e-bay environment. He is also under the impression that I also attempted to do this (I did not). Finally he said that he was sorry that I was not selected for the show, that he is upset that I shared the information, and that he already received 7 phone calls about the blog – 1 being from an executive.

Now … I chose not to respond to him because he is entitled to his opinion. To defend myself to you all – my contact is responsible for his own actions. He chose to relay information to me on his own – I did not coheres him in any way. My opinion regarding the way the 5^th auction was handle is just that – my opinion. I do feel it was not fair to allow a private sale – if it had been posted on e-bay we would have all had the same opportunity to bid – and it would have been random selection as to who caught the Buy It Now feature. I did send an e-mail to him after the fact saying it was a shame that the auction wasn’t allowed to play out as I was willing to pay $1500. He made a statement that perhaps he could set something up – and I said that it was OK – my husband wouldn’t want me to bid the funds – however there were many people on the forum who would love the opportunity for another auction. The only hard decision I had to face was whether or not to disclose his name in my story. I thought in order for the story to be credible I had to include his name.

It’s funny – I tried for almost 3 months to catch the attention of 3 Ball. It wasn’t until Monday all the executives decided to read my blog. I continue to see hits from GE/NBC servers today - so let me officaly say HELLO to NBC and 3 Ball. If you happen to be hiring .... I am looking for a job. It seems I have too much time on my hands.

The Biggest Loser 3 Casting- When Good People Meet Trolls

EDITED: Let me preface this with the fact that this was MY STORY to tell. It was based on my own personal experiences with the show - and not something that was commonplace. The thoughts and opinions stated below are my own and do not reflect the opinions of anyone else - or any other company - affiliated with the show. The story below gives one point of view of how the casting process went - mine - and was in no way written because I didn't make it onto the show. The point of the article was to reflect on how thousands of people across the country have their own story to tell - that many of us encountered obstacles along the way. No one else should be held accountable for the writings below.

The casting process for the Biggest Loser 3 is coming to an end. We have been told by 3Ball Productions that all finalists will be notified by the end of the day on Monday, March 13th 2006. These finalists will be notified via telephone with a message to pack their bags and head to California where they will be sequestered for 10 days. During this sequestering period the cast will undergo physical exams and additional interviews prior to being selected as the FINAL CAST. Shooting begins on/around April 3rd at the Simi Valley ranch in the heart of California.

Since this date marks the end of my voyage in the casting process I thought I’d write an article based on my own experience with the show – and from conversations I’ve had with others regarding their casting processes. I found that my story was similar to others across the country – and wanted to share this for future contestants. In all I have been told that over 40,000 people submitted casting tapes or attended casting calls (or both) for the Biggest Loser 3. Those hopefuls consist of desperate Americans seeking the ultimate weight-loss experience – one that would change their life for the better. Many feel the time spent on the ranch with trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels far outweighed the $250,000 grand prize – and they were driven enough for this casting process to become a heated challenge – often turning ugly – but overall a fantastic experience they will never forget.

Many friendships were formed at casting calls around the country. Thousands of people stood in lines in the snow, the rain, overnight, and in theme parks! Some went home disappointed when the San Diego call was canceled due to the lack of crowd control. I attended the Orlando Casting call at Universal Studios - #197 in a line that grew longer and longer. I was told when the directors reached #600 – everyone was asked to go home. But the persistent stayed in line and the casting directors were able to see close to 800 people in Orlando. The actual call was done in groups of 13 – and lasted all of 5 minutes. We were asked what our names, weight and jobs were and then what our goal weight was and what our motivational clothing would be. And then it was over! If you weren’t able to catch the eye of the Casting Director – you were out of luck!

While I am sure several people received call backs from this casting day – I was unable to find anyone. From others I have been told that a call back consisted of a one-on-one interview in front of the camera. The Casting Directors interviewed you based on answers from your long application – and you were asked to send a message to Jillian and/or Bob. I have also been told that some hopefuls were asked to bring a change of clothes and were filmed in each of the outfits selected.

While this was the end of my casting call experience, I did make my way to the NBC Biggest Loser forum. At the forum I met a wonderful group of people who participate in supporting one another in their battle to lose weight. People from all over the country – AND WORLD – participate in the forum offering friendship and advice. I learned from this group that it was still possible to send in a casting video to 3 Ball Productions and decided this would be my best chance of impressing the Casting Directors.

My tape was 5 minutes long and turned out rather well – I posted it for a short time online for others to comment on and received some great feedback. Off the tape went to 3 Ball with a copy of my long application, photos of me now and back when I was thin, my resume, and my New Years Resolution. The tape arrived at 3 Ball on Valentine’s Day – just a few days ahead of the February 17th deadline. I have heard nothing from 3 Ball since.

Over the course of the past few weeks there has been A LOT of drama taking place on the Biggest Loser forum – and within the chat rooms. I learned a great deal of information from a variety of sources during this process. I will not be naming these sources as I do not want to hurt their chances of making it onto the show. The drama began with an online auction. I wrote the following article during this time frame but refrained from publishing it as I was afraid it would hurt my chances of making it onto the show.

Could the Biggest Loser Audition Process be COMPROMISED?

A few weeks before the final deadline for tapes to arrive at 3 Ball productions, I – and others like me – participated in an online auction to benefit the Children’s Athletic Foundation. Each online auction toted the following description:

“This is a once in a lifetime offer. (part 2) NBC and 3 Ball Productions are auctioning off a chance to have your Audition Tape and Application VIP HAND DELIVERED!!! to the HEAD CASTING DIRECTOR. …AND… EXECUTIVE PRODUCER of The Biggest Loser. How important is this? Well if you imagine the hundreds of thousands of applicants, it makes a HUGE difference. The day after the season finale over 47,000 applications were downloaded off the NBC site. Tens of thousands of people have waited out for hours just for a chance to be seen by one of the hundreds of casting people traveling the country… but this is a E ticket to the top of the pile. The winner will have their video and application hand delivered to the Casting department, then to the Executive Producer and put into the hands of the two people who have the biggest impact on who makes the cast of the Biggest Loser. The Executive Producer and Head Casting Director, are the people you NEED to impress to get on the show. We will even snap a pic of your envelope being passed off. As a bonus… just so you don’t have to wait around wondering. You will get hand written feedback o your submission, letting you know if you are in or out, and what you could improve upon for future submissions. The Casting Deadline is approaching. The February 11th Open Call may be the last.”

After unsuccessfully bidding on 3 of 5 auctions, and waiting to see how auction #4 would turn out, I was patiently awaiting the 5th auction to begin when I received this e-mail message from the seller:

“The LAST auction ends tomorrow. Two were bought for BUY IT NOW bids of $750, One for a BUY IT NOW of $1000, and one ended on Saturday for $960. The last auction is currently at $760”

Well – of course I became VERY curious to see how I had missed the 5th auction! I quickly found the closed auctions for the two $750 ‘Buy It Nows’, the $960 auction, and the now closed auction of $970. But there was absolutely no sign of a closed $1000 Buy It Now auction.

I’m currently awaiting a response from the seller with details on this last auction. I’m not the only one who smells something fishy – as members of the Biggest Loser Forum begin to speculate on just what happened to that last auction. Did the seller cave into the request of one bidder and offer the auction up in a private sale? Would that sort of move compromise the integrity of the entire audition process for the Biggest Loser? Would the show Producers be opening themselves up to a nightmare they can’t even begin to imagine? Would I myself be throwing away MY opportunity for making it on the show by becoming a whistle blower? Let’s hope not. For now I will patiently await the reply e-mail message from the seller of the auction.

Here’s the response I received from the seller:

“I had just lowered the second buy it now from $1,000 to $750, and someone bought it within like 6 hrs. I had 2 other auctions running without the Buy it now option. Someone Emailed me that they would buy it at the $1000 price if I listed it. As Ebay and Paypal both take a cut it was more cost effective to have them just post the payment on the CAF website and add more money to the charity by not paying the fees.”

So it looks like one bidder did indeed have an unfair advantage over the rest of us. Too bad – the charity auctions just became a bit tainted right there – and the entire audition process compromised because ONE person received an unfair advantage over the rest. However – I’m told – this kind of thing happens in Hollywood everyday. Am I biter that it wasn’t me? NO – I just wish I had that one last chance to bid on the auction. It would make the whole process more random. Now someone has truly paid to have their application moved to the top of the pile.

Obviously the topic of conversation on the forum was WHO had won the auctions. While three contestants came forward – we still have no idea who contestants #4 & #5 were. And we will probably never know.

It seemed as if the drama continued daily on the message forum. Trolls were inundating the forum with topics such as “The Finalists Have Been Chosen” and “Casting Is Complete”. Needless to say these were all false rumors – but I felt the need to get confirmation from the casting directors themselves. After the auction I had been in communication with the “seller” regarding the casting process and to see if any of these rumors were true. We exchanged a total of 12 e-mails all together. It was on February 27th – at the height of the frenzy – that I asked my contact to confirm rumors on the message boards. It seemed that information was coming at the forum participants from all directions – many people citing sources “of importance” at 3 Ball. It was truly difficult to weed fact from fiction and I was at my own breaking point. I decided to see exactly who my own contact was – thinking he was a production assistant for the show. After some research I learned I was dealing with someone much higher on the food chain – I’d been talking to David Blass the Art Director of the show! I knew that if I addressed Blass as one business person to another I might be able to find out the TRUTH about what was going on.

I sent Blass the links to the two message forum threads that were in question – asking him to please shed some light on the truth. The response to my questions follows:

#1 - Are the producers working from a short list?

Yes, but like 100-200 of each sex

#2 - Have they sent out packages to the final group of candidates?

Not to my knowledge, as they are still doing interviews

#3 - Should those whose tapes arrived last week hang up their hats and move on?

NOT if they were on the VIP Delivery list, as I know one of the three that the casting director looked at on Friday was getting a call back. Waiting to see who it was.

Blass also posted to the threads in question with his own response – as BigLoserArt:

“I am sure that many folks in the casting department WISH that the cast was locked and chosen as they could then get some sleep, but that is just not the case. It is an ongoing process of finding just the right people and making sure that their schedule fits with the show, and that they pass all background checks etc.”

I appreciated him for being truthful with the information – it helped me maintain my own sanity through the end of this process and allowed me to offer some guidance to others on the forum. Yet – the insanity on the message boards continued and reached an all time high on March 3rd when the following message was posted:

I received this email today:

Dear Kelley,
Thank you for applying to be on the next season of The Biggest Loser.
You've taken the first step in getting healthy and you should be proud of yourself. Unfortunately, finalists have been selected and notified. We will welcome your application for next season and good luck on your weightloss!

Sincerely,
The Biggest Loser Staff

Of course that started a whole firestorm of messages doubting everything else we had heard from 3 Ball. It was later determined that the post was indeed the work of another Troll – but it was too late for me. I had sent the posting to Blass for confirmation – and I believe I lost all the credibility I had built up to that point with him. He responded with a short note that he was out of town on business and could not confirm the message. Though I sent a message of apology the minute I found out the thread was posted by a Troll, this was my last contact with Blass.

This same day – March 3rd – I heard from a good friend that her video tape had been reviewed by 3 Ball and that they had contacted her for photos and a bio. I was ecstatic for her and regained some hope for myself – as our tapes had arrived on the same day! This meant 3 Ball was still reviewing materials! My friend heard back from 3 Ball the following Monday and received a package in the mail the next day.

The Biggest Loser 3 Package is the documentation we all yearn for! It includes legal documentation giving the show permission to run an extensive background check on you as well as medical release forms to be completed by your doctor. This Magical Package is your pass to the semi-finals – meaning you might be the one to get a call on March 13th inviting you to California! There has been much speculation on the forum about the package – about who has received the package – about if you didn’t get a package are you still in the running – and anything else you can imagine. It became so bad that 3 Ball Productions put the following message up on their “Hotline”:

“You have reached the casting hotline for the Biggest Loser. Finalist for the Biggest Loser 3 have not yet been chosen. We will begin to contact finalists only beginning Monday March 13th. If you have received a letter from us stating that you may receive two questionnaires from us - You may receive a larger package. What this means is we may require more documentation from you. There is a chance you may not receive anything further. If you do not receive a package by March 13th then you will not be receiving one. If you belong to an HMO or have difficulty scheduling appointments with your doctor, you may want to schedule an appointment now. Again we will contact finalists only on Monday March 13th via phone-- until that time NO ONE HAS BEEN RULED OUT. Be sure to check back often as this hotline message may change.”

This is how we learned that March 13th would be D-day. As I write this article – D-Day is one day away. Things on the message forum have calmed down considerably. One of the auction winners attempted to post her own experiences in the casting process – but her post was deleted. The one piece of information that stands out from her post was a comment from the Casting Director who had reviewed her tape: “You were not selected for the show as there was a change in the demographics. When you see the show in the fall you will understand.” This is my latest quest to decipher – what the heck does that mean? Obviously the show is attempting to maintain all levels of secrecy regarding the final casting of the show – but what would make them change their demographics mid casting – and why? What is the secret twist they are attempting to hide. I guess we’ll all need to tune in this fall to find out.

I have asked my friends to share their stories – and I will post these on my blog as they are given to me. It is important to share our experiences so those that follow us don’t make the same mistakes. So next years hopefuls don’t fall prey to the same trolls that decided to haunt our lives. If you don’t want to share your story with me – then post it to the Biggest Loser forum for all to read. It will be very much appreciated!

Obviously I am not a finalist. I did not receive the Magical Package nor the Miracle Phone Call. I will continue my weight loss journey myself at home – but I am not alone. I met wonderful, supportive friends online and we have decided to work together in our struggle with our weight. Career Options - What To do!?

Ok - I'm not having luck finding a new job - and my unemployment check runs out at the end of this month. So what am I going to do?!?!?!?! Panic is the first thing that comes to mind. I need a Plan B. What are my options at this point?

1. Continue as is - looking for a Full-Time job and hope I find one - but live in the poor house.

2. Get a part-time job somewhere while looking for a full-time job. Perhaps Borders - discounted books and a paycheck - sounds very appealing. Less time to interview and look for a real job.

3. Go back to school for my Masters Degree - downside I'd have to take the GRE or GMAT - and wait till the Fall to start classes.

4. Go back to school for my teachers certification - would take 2 years to complete.

5. Take online classes in drafting or web design - and work part-time. Gain a marketable skill and then look for a full-time job. I'd have to start out again on the bottom rung of the ladder though - and this doesn't sound appealing.

6. Get signed on at a Temp Agency and hope to find a position that's a perfect fit for me. Only downside - I'm already listed at several agencies and they all say I'm over qualified for the positions they fill.

I just don't know what to do. I really am screwed no matter which path I chose.

Cruel & Unusual Punishment of the M&M's kind:
Last October I applied for amanagement position at the new "M&M's World" retail store coming to our nearest mall. While I never got that position - I was added onto the e-mail subscription list for the company.

Now - on a weekly basis I am reminded that #1 - I didn't get the job and #2 - that I can't eat their product anymore.

I've asked twice to be removed from their newsletter - I'm thinking of sending a letter to the President of the company and letting him know just how cruel & unsual their punishment is!

Beautiful Sunny Florida Day :
This morning hubby and I decided to take advantage of the georgous "spring" weather we're having this week in Orlando. We headed over to the closest Bird Sanctuary and hiked one of the trails.

I can't reccomend anything more enjoyable - more relaxing - and more exhilirating than hiking in the spring. I came home so much more calm.

The best thing is - the hike counted as my cardio for the day. It didn't even FEEL like exercise!

So - Happy Wednesday! Go give a tree a great bug HUG!

Laughter Is The Best Medicine!

While clearing out some old files off the office computer I found one of my favorite speeches that I wrote while getting my degree in Organizational Communication. Writen back in 1999 - it's intent would be fitting for my mood today. So everyone - put a smile on! Laughter really is the best medicine!

The spring term is almost over, thank goodness! If you are like me, you’ve had a major project or exam each week—with the work load only getting worse as it gets closer to finals. Every minute of each day is planned out for school, work and family, with very little time for yourself. You collapse into bed each night exhausted, try to catch a couple of hours of rest before starting all over again the next day.

It’s conditions like this that often lead to depression and stress. According to the World Health organization, depression is on the rise worldwide. The National Alliance for the mentally ill has listed many different factors leading up to this outbreak of sadness. It often takes up to 8 years to correctly diagnose depression, leaving many people untreated for extended periods. People living in stressful environments and situations are more prone to depression. There have even been studies showing a genetic link which lead scientists to believe that this illness can be hereditary. There are many different chemical substances, legal and otherwise, available to ease the symptoms of depression—but many of these have disturbing side effects leaving the patient feeling out of control, irritable and with little or no appetite.

Stress is also a result of such an active lifestyle. According to Dr. Steven Burns, one in every ten people have a low tolerance for stress. This means that they reach their stress levels sooner, and easier than others. Stress can come from environmental, emotional and physical factors, and can be the result from any change to your life. As students we run the risk of suffering the most stress on a daily basis. When one become stressed they often feel that have lost control of their situation, and their perspective on the situation becomes very one sided. We can not control events in our external situation, but we do have the ability to control how we view these events and the emotional response we chose to have to them.

Humor is the solution to this global condition of depression and stress. Patty Wooten, a registered therapeutic nurse, has discovered that laughter banishes the feelings of sadness that can lead to depression. The experience of laughter lifts ones spirits leaving you feeling carefree, lighthearted and hopeful. Laughter can be used as an empowerment tool and allows us to take control of our emotional responses to stressful situations. One only has to spend a few moments with a child to experience the sheer joys of laughter. Seeing the world through their eyes can lead to humorous situations.

Humor can give us a different perspective on our problems. As Bill Cosby has said, "If you can laugh at it, you can survive it." Laughing at yourself when you are feeling stressed is not always easy.

Remember how good it feels to giggle on the phone all night with a good friend, or how happy you were after seeing a movie so bizarre you found yourself rolling on the floor with laughter. You can even find humor towards work situations in the comics—just look at Dilbert! If you can relate your situation to one of hilarity, you can find a way to laugh!

Laughter has even been proven to support recovery in illness. Some of the most exciting research exploring the healing value of laughter is in the area of psyconeuroimmunology. This is the area of research that explores the connections between the nervous system, the hormonal system, and the immune system. Serum Cortisol is a natural substance in your body that suppresses your immune system. The Loma Linda University Medical Center has shown that laughter can reduce these dangerous levels. Other research has shown that laughter increases the level of natural killer cells that attack tumor cells. By laughing often, we can increase our chances of survival by building up those immune systems and natural killer cells.

The best part of laughter is you really don’t need any "reason" to laugh….just start! But, if you’re feeling a bit nervous about laughter here’s a list, from Dr. Annette Goodheart—laughter therapist-- of excellent reasons to do just that: laugh. Keep these reasons in mind and remember the benefits you get—physiologically, psychologically and spiritually. Indulge in your lighter side and laugh whenever, wherever and with whom ever you happen to be. Laughter is portable, immediate therapy…think of it as a way of "charging up" the dead battery of your soul.

The Devil Inside

Some days I feel just evil. Yes - I'm a sick and evil person every once in awhile. Today is one of those days! I happened to notice a certain event in our local newsletter - and just laughed and laughed. It turned into one of those evil laughs too ... bawhahahahahahahaha. I just want to keep on laughing now. But it is not a laughing matter. I'm sure many of you won't 'get' why I find the situation so funny.

You see, I opened up our community newsletter and read that my previous employer - the Golf Course I had quit working at last August - was being AUCTIONED next week for a measly $2,500,000. The owner paid $6,500,000 for the property 10 years ago. hhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!! I can't stop laughing - it hurts.

Sick and evil - I swear I don't mean to feel this way. Really I don't. I'd never wish ill will on anyone - or cause intentional harm. But to see this company take a loss on a property that could be valued so much higher - it's just a great big I TOLD YOU SO opportunity for me.

What do you think the very first thing I did - after recovering from all this laughter? I sent an e-mail to the realtor asking him to let me know who purchases the property. As former Director of Marketing of the property I think I have a good opportunity here - they hire me and I give them all the information I know.

Now - if I happened to have had the $2,500,000 to purchase the property myself I would do it. One would be insane to pass up on this - it's a steal! The property values in our area have tripled in the past year - and our community is HOT HOT HOT real estate wise right now. The only down fall is the community association is attempting to keep the golf course a golf course. If they were smart - they'd buy the property and then sell out individual lots for custom homes. Just think - if you could fit 4 homes on each of the 18 holes - that would be 72 custom lots selling for $100,000 each - would bring in $7,200,000!

Of course - as a home owner in the area myself I'd much rather keep the property a golf course. It's too pretty and there are tons of birds here. So - the absolute best situation would be for a large golf management company to purchase the course - refurbish it completely - make it a bird sanctuary - and then sell memberships at $10,000 each.

There you have it - the dark side of Hush Hush. Secretly twisted and evil in her fight against corporate injustice. But someone please help me - because seriously - I can't stop LAUGHING!

The Biggest Loser 3 Candidates!

I've been spending time talking with many wonderful people at the NBC Biggest Loser Forum. The majority of people who are posting there now have attended a casting call or submited a video for the Biggest Loser Season 3. We are reaching the final days in that casting process and it has been a very stressful time for us all.

I have had numerous people contact me from the board to let me know where they are at this time in the casting process - and I can tell you they are pretty darn far into this game! {Which means my own chances of getting onto the show are now ZERO}. They are all fantastic people - and if each of these individuals are chosen it will make for one heck-of-a show. Their personalities are completly different - I can see one or two of them clashing - but in the end they will be a great group that winds up not only reaching their weight loss goals - but winning the hearts of the viewers. They have definelty won over my heart - one good friend in particular who I know will make it all the way!

So this week I am choosing them as my Featured Artists. While not your traditional 'artist' - though Reality TV shows have become a powerful entity in today's Pop Culture - these candidates practice the art of support and friendship. Good thoughts and wishes to everyone who has received the "magic phone call" - you know who you are!

Here's hoping to see you ALL on the ranch!

Job Search Update - When Will It End!?

It's becoming rather apparent that my Biggest Loser dreams are coming to a screaching halt. I found out this morning that the casting directors will have their short list complete by Friday in time for a review by the big whigs. While this doesn't rule me out all together - it does make my chances to get onto the show very VERY slim. It was a fun adventure while it lasted and I don't regret it for one minute. I am a bit disappointed - as I don't think my casting tape was even looked at - but that's Fate. It wasn't meant to be.

I obviously did not hear back from the Country Club in regards to their Membership Director position. If I were still a candidate I am sure I would have heard something by now - the last follow-up I did was about 10 days ago. The response I received was that the decision would be made last week. So - let's take job #7 off the books now too.

Which leaves me the one position I actually wanted out of all that I interviewed for. The newspaper. I'll follow-up again on Thursday with my HR rep - I'm almost afraid to do so because I don't want rejection #8! {Or would that be #9 if you count the BL casting?} Last week I was told that they too would be making a decision for 3rd interviews this week - to keep checking in to see what my status is.

My unemployment status really doesn't expire until April - so I'm trying to figure out if it would be in my best interest to stay home till then - or to go get a part time job. I guess it comes down to money vs. sanity. From a monetary standpoint - my unemployment check will offer me the higher paycheck. But from a sanity standpoint - a part time job will give me something to do.

My husband I am sure is ready to boot me out of the house. It's funny - since he's been home on disability he's found himself relying more on his computer for entertainment. He plays a game called City of Villans - and he's created a My Space page for his character. {So silly - if anyone wants to see it the URL is: myspace.com/zeannoyingfrenchie } Yet when I spend time online on various message boards he seems to get upset that I'm spending so much time on my computer.

Apparently I am obsessed with message boards. So - I'm making a concentrated effort to limit my time posting on them. I've started working on revamping my personal web site - and if all goes well and I can figure out how to secure the pages with my family genealogy on them - I will post the link here. I use FrontPage to create my web site - it's not the easiest program to figure out - and since I'm no web guru I'm having a heck of a time figuring it all out. Very frustrating - because there really is not support for FrontPage considering Microsoft is doing away with the program. And the support that is available assumes you're a web guru to begin with.

I'm going out on a limb here and featuring Taylor Hicks as my featured artist this week. Though an up and coming star - Taylor seems to be the favorite in this years American Idol contest. His unique country-blues-soul sound has not been heard on the show before, and is a refreshing change from the bubblegum pop of idols past.

Another momentous occasion

Tonight was my sons first official "group date" - sort of. He wouldn't call it that - but there were 3 guys and 3 gals - so you do the math. They headed over to the Mouse to see "Date Movie". Which I assume went really well - considering he called at 10pm to say "Mom - we didn't discuss a curfew before I left tonight". Curfew? Hmmm ... I'm wondering which of his friends mentioned that because I've never had to discuss curfews with him before. What is the current norm for an almost 16 year old anyway? As I hemmed and hewed on the phone - my hubby shouts out - midnight! OK - I said -midnight sounds good. Or whenever your friends head home- whichever comes FIRST. AND then if you are going to be more than 5 minutes late - call me!

It's 11:40pm - and I'm waiting to see if he'll actually make his very first curfew. If he doesn't - should I be a traditional parent and give him a lengthy lecture? Or should I enjoy the moment with him - and sit down to find out how much fun he had? Not worry about him coming in 15 minutes late? See the smile on his face upon his return from his first official 'group-date" - sort of?

I love to see those kinds of smiles!

Eagles Nesting At Kennedy Space Center

For those of you who don't know -
KSC has quite a few pairs of nesting Bald Eagles. The most famous is a pair that return every year to nest in a pine tree

just off Kennedy Parkway North (SR3) about half way between the

VAB and Kennedy Parkway West (SR 405). Every year our photography contractor is employed to mount cameras in the tree before their arrival to try and film them raising their eaglets. Some of the cameras are motion activated and others are remotely activated by personnel usually sitting in a van hundreds of yards away. These are some of their most recent photographs.

Unforgettable Experiences

It isn't often one can say they came within 100 yards of the President of the United States and then sat down and ate dinner with a Communist. But that is exactly what happened to me tonight.

While headed out to our friends Wedding Rehearsal dinner tonight, my hubby and I witnessed the Presidential motorcade roll past. It is amazing that so many police & rescue resources are ~~wasted~~ utilized to move the President from one location to the next. I think I counted at LEAST 20 police cars and motorcycles along with 5-6 rescue vehicles. Then of course there were the 6 huge gas guzzling, environment killing SUV's. As we realized exactly who this circus was for, my natural instincts took over and somehow my hand made a one fingered salute to the leader of the free world - several times over. I'm not sure what came over me - and I'm not even sure how long the salute lasted. All I do know is that I felt so much better after expressing my thoughts about Dubbya directly towards Dubbya. Even though I am 99.9% sure he probably didn't even see my one fingered tribute.

That we thought would be the end of our excitement for the evening. You see our friend is a relatively religious man who met his bride at their church. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It's just that we don't have much in common with their OTHER friends. Since my husband was part of the bridal party - we had to attend the rehearsal dinner out of courtesy to the grooms family.

Our friend warned us ahead of time that we would be seated with an 'interesting' individual with a 'unique' outlook on the world. It took me all of five minutes to figure out which of our table mates is was. Being the curious person I am I went straight for the jugular and started questioning him on his adventures in life. The gentleman in question is in his early 70's - so he's had quiet a life. The details he was willing to part with had him working in Nigeria for several years - teaching History and other life's lessons. Which I found completely fascinating! You know me - I love to learn about other cultures and their traditions. But I didn't have time to get into details with him Upon his return to the USA, he told me that he taught history classes off and on at the High School and local Community College - and that he was able to graduate from Harvard with a degree in History as well as Sociology. His story stopped here - he refused to relate any more of his life. His wife, leaned over and smiled and asked 'aren't you going to tell the rest?' And his brother leaned over and smiled and said ' there is so many more fascinating things to tell this young lady.' But my table mate refused.

Later, as we were leaving I stopped to wish the bride good luck tomorrow. I asked if she could perhaps give me more details on her fascinating Uncle one day. She whispered to me - he's the family black sheep and nobody talks about it. During the Cuban missile Crisis he actually lived in Cuba - and is still a member of the Communist Party.

Well - I thought that wasn't such a bad secret to keep. In fact - when I see him tomorrow I may just have the nerve to ask him what life was like in Cuba. Certainly it has to be drastically different than life here in the USA. But I'm not sure if this gentleman is ready to share his story with a stranger - and I can tell he doesn't REALLY want to be prodded. I'll have to play it by ear.

It's been one of the most interesting evenings for me in awhile. I actually enjoyed the evening and the company that we shared. Just goes to show you - what you thought would be a dull event could end up being an unforgettable experience.

U2 Wins FIVE Grammy's!

Because of time constraints - and because of their recent success at the Grammy's - I'm going to select U2 as my featured artist this week.

I've been a fan of U2 since about 1985 - before I attended my 1st U2 concert. My sister and I ended up sleeping all night outside a shopping mall in 30 degree weather to get tickets for that concert. And it was well worth the freeze! I scored tickets in the THIRD ROW - and I have NEVER forgotten that show.

I am obsessed with U2 - but not to the point I know every minute detail of their lives. I know that I've posted this all here before - but the new people need to understand where this insanity came from. Bono smiled at me at that first concert. I was looking around the stadium - at the hundreds of thousands of people screaming and dancing and singing along with the band. I stood in one spot and slowly turned around - 360 degrees. The ENERGY in that stadium was so intense. It was the closest to a religious experince I'll ever have. When I turned back to the stage - Bono was watching ME! I must have smiled - because this wonderful slow grin spread across his face too. It was like we shared this secret - it was amazing. I've been obsessed ever since.

If you havn't been to a U2 concert before - SHAME ON YOU! It's an experience everyone should have. If you've never even heard of U2 - well - you've been living under some sort of rock - haven't you? Here's their web site: www.u2.com

U2's music is rock - but it definetly has some irish folk sounds mixed in. Deeply political in their songs - Bono and the Edge have found a unique sound to spread messages of love and hope. Their latest album - 'How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb' - just won 5 Grammy's at this years award show.

No New Blogs? What's Up With That?

I know! I know! I haven't updated the "Daily Blog" in a few days! What can I say - I've been distracted by a little project. I put together my very first "home video" - actually - it's a casting tape for The Biggest Loser. It took me several days to shoot and edit. But it is now DONE and sent off in the mail to get lost in the pile of thousnads of others.

What else am I going to work on while I'm unemployed?

Today is house clean-up day - and it must be complete before NOON - when my father-in-law arrives. SO - todays Featured Artist won't be posted till this afternoon. AND I have a really good topic for another blog - SIZISM. Thanks to Marty McFLy at Medialine. It will be great - I'll jump up on my soap box and let the world have it!

Interview Process - Step 6?

I guess I should probably update my Blog Readers on the status of my job search. As you know, I was called in for a follow-up interview with the Country Club last week. The interview went rather well - I reiterated how wonderful I was and made sure the GM knew I wanted this job. The GM told me that he was just waiting on the results of my background check (step #3 in the inteview process) and that the following day I will received a call from his HR consultant for a phone screening.

We'll call the phone screening Step #4 in interviewing for this position. We spoke for almost an hour on the phone. It was intense and I was exhausted when I came off the phone. I had to relay my previous experience, go through the whole strengths and weaknesses scenario, and explain why I thought moving from strictly marketing to a strictly sales position was a good idea. Of course I told her that this position - while indeed a sales position - was more marketing than anything else. In order to make a membership sale - you have to be a PR person as well as know how to market the course. I also told her the $1000 a week commission potential was highly attractive!! She then asked me to sell her a pen over the phone! This is where my brain stopped working - and I choked. It wouldn't surprise me if I lost the job based on this sales pitch alone. Of course - I came up with a witty sales pitch the second I hung up the phone - it all rushed back to me!

Friday morning I received an e-mail from the HR Consultant - asking me to take a Meyers-Briggs personality assessment. I must have done something good in the phone interview - because that put me through to stage #5. The assessment is similar to this one I found on the internet: Myers-Briggs Assment . Of course, I took this online before I took the assessment for the HR consultant to see how I would score. It came up that my personality was an INFJ - moderately expressed in all of these: Introverted - Intuitive - Feeling - Judging.

One of the links the test forwarded me to for an analysis of my results states that I'm a Counselour Idealist! Which is prety much dead on to how I behave. "Counsleors tend to be private, sensitive people, and are not generally visible leaders, they nevertheless work quite intensely with those close to them, quietly exerting their influence behind the scenes with their families, friends, and colleagues. This type has great depth of personality; they are themselves complicated, and can understand and deal with complex issues and people."

The other link states that I am an Activist - in it for the cause and not the glory. Other famous INJF's are: Chaucer, Robbie Burns, Gahndi, and Mother Teresa. So I'm in good company.

Now - whether this makes me a good sales person is beyond me! Perhaps because I can emphathize with others better - I'll be able to read their needs better - and therfore be more able to sell a membership to them. Who knows!

Now I play the waiting game - again. I'm not going to hold my breath this week. I've got activites to do around the house: fix the screens that were damaged in the hurricanes, pull up an old garden and install a new raised be, and produce my video to send to the Biggest Loser casting directors. Things to keep my mind off the job!

The funny thing is .... even this Myers-Briggs Assessment states that I should be a writer or work in public service. I really KNOW deep down in my heart that this is the feild I should work in. However - I can't locate a poisition that will allow me to do this. I need a job with a high salary so that I can take care of my family. A writer will always be dirt poor. I'll just have to keep saving the world on my own time - and write about it here.

I did some more research into the Meyers-Briggs Assessments and found this in regards to my personality trait INFJ. My dad and son probably fall into this category as well:

The Protector

As an INFJ, your primary mode of living is focused internally, where you take things in primarily via intuition. Your secondary mode is external, where you deal with things according to how you feel about them, or how they fit with your personal value system. INFJs are gentle, caring, complex and highly intuitive individuals.

Artistic and creative, they live in a world of hidden meanings and possibilities. Only one percent of the population has an INFJ Personality Type, making it the most rare of all the types. INFJs place great importance on havings things orderly and systematic in their outer world. They put a lot of energy into identifying the best system for getting things done, and constantly define and re-define the priorities in their lives.

On the other hand, INFJs operate within themselves on an intuitive basis which is entirely spontaneous. They know things intuitively, without being able to pinpoint why, and without detailed knowledge of the subject at hand. They are usually right, and they usually know it. Consequently, INFJs put a tremendous amount of faith into their instincts and intuitions. Sue Monk Kidd is the author of one of my favorite books, 'The Secret Life Of Bees.' I have a habit of browsing excessively through Borders, and had discovered their Break Out Artist section last year. Sue Monk Kidd was among them and I decided to give this first time fiction author a try.

The book is really a coming-of-age story about a young girl named Lily who is attempting to piece together the details of her mothers life. Life was harsh for Lily growing up with her father - she had witnessed the killing of her mother when she was four years old. After finding herself in a bit of trouble, Lily flees to a small town she had seen written on the back of an old postcard. As it turns out, Lily finds herself among old friends of her mother and learns more than she had expected.

It's truly a heart-warming story - and one that you won't forget. A story bout the power we hold as women and the eternal bonds between mother and daughter. Often times, while in Borders I'll see women reading the back cover of the book. I'll walk over and say to them - "that was one of the best books I've ever read - you'll love it."

Background Check In Progress

Someone is running a background check on me. I'm almost 100% sure. How can I tell? There are some REALLY suspicious IP addresses logged on my blog stats. When I say suspicious - I mean - from law offices, and the social security administration, and from LA. They all know my web address - so it's not as if they've come across my blog via a blog search.

Oh yeah - I guess you all should know - that I can see SOME details regarding your visits to this blog. Basically I can see the first 5 - 8 digits of the IP address - and can see where the Server is located. No personal information at all - but enough for me to see something fishy is going on.

If it IS a background check - it could be one of two companies performing it. #1 - and most likely - the company I've just interviewed with. #2 - the Producers with The Biggest Loser. I'm leaning towards the Producers - because I GAVE them the web address on the application. Also - the GM at the company told me today that he already had the results of my background check.

So .... what does this all mean? I hate knowing that someone is snooping into my background. I'd rather they just ask me straight up. I've really got nothing to hide. I will ask politely - if you are reading my blog for the purposes of researching my background - just click that lil' comment button below and tell me WHO wanted the check done. It would allow me to sleep better at night. THANKS!

Patience - My Friend - It's A Virtue!

After venting yesterday on my blog - many of you expressed concern for my well being. Ok - so it was just my mom that called to yell at me. But that's not the point. The point is - I was just venting my frustrations! I'm fine!

That being said - after spending part of the day moping about not getting a call back - I heard from the Country Club I had interviewed with in December. Their original candidate was not able to accept their offer - she received a counter offer from her existing company - and they wanted me to come in for a 2nd interview.

After getting over the initial insult of being their 2nd choice - I scheduled an interview for this morning. I am just back!

The interview went really well - as they all seem to. We went more into my background at my previous employer - and I asked some questions about how the company was set up and how involved corporate was. I rocked! I was confident in my abilities - and answered every question well. At the end of the interview the GM stated that there were 3 outside candidates and just this week an internal candidate put in her resume for the job. {Dang internal candidates!!!!} The next step would be to have an outside HR consultant execute a phone interview to test my phone skills #1, and to give an impartial opinion to the GM on my skills.

This put me at ease - because I knew then that the GM was more interested in WHO I was. Which is perfect! I'm more relieved after hearing him say that.

I researched the company and am impressed with what I saw - they are continuing to expand into the Florida area - and will have two new properties within the next 5 years. It's a job with stability and a future.

Now I must play the waiting game once again.

A Blog About Nothing

Today is the last day of the first month in the new year. And absolutely nothing has changed. Why is it that we get so excited about the arrival of a new year? We treat it like a giant celebration - woo hoo - we made it through another year! So what? What has the new year brought you? Nothing!

I don't celebrate New Years - I never have. I've always avoided the parties and the nutcases like the plauge. I tend to dread the coming of a New Year. But this year - I said - well - why not be optomistic about a New Year and see what happens. Nothing. Nothing happened.

I took a look over the records I have to keep for the unemployment office this morning. Since August 12th I have been looking for a new job {This is a week before I quit spontaneously}. I've sent my resume into 85 unique companies througout the Orlando area - applying to 105 different jobs. And nothing! I'm such a huge loser - I can't even make it through to a call back on the show The Biggest Loser.

Ok - so what if I'm dissappointed with not getting a call back. You're right - I shouldn't take it to heart. I had a one-in-a-million chance of actually getting a call back. I've heard them all over on the Biggest Loser forum as we all try and console one another. But - damnit - I am disappointed and I'm allowed to be moody about it!

Home From Casting Call!!!

I just got home from the Biggest Loser casting call! I arrived at 7:50am - and was #192 in line!!! The gate had been open 5 minutes before I arrived - so that tells you how many people were lingering around Universal property in the wee hours of the morning. We were screened by security as we walked into the park - and directed towards the promenade area of City Walk to line up.

At 10:00am two page applications were distributed to anyone who didn't have the 9 page one. Thanks goodness I had the 9 page application with me - I was able to give much more detail! Then about 10:30ish they started pulling in groups of 13. There were two casting directors - so 26 people were seen at a time - and the line moved pretty quickly. The whole thing was very well organized!

In the group, we were asked Name, Age, Occupation and current weight. Then we were asked "When I get down to my ideal weight, I'll ....." My response was "I'll be better able to care for my husband, and also land the perfect job!" Then we were asked "What would your motivational clothing be?" My response was a business suit - because the larger ones are not as nice as those for skinner people."

Christine (our casting director) said they'd be making call backs within two to three days! If we didn't hear from them - we didn't make it.

Also - while there a photographer from the Orlando Sentinel snapped our photo - so we had to stop on the way out to give her our info. Some of the people in our group thought we were being pulled aside for a call back! But - sorry - that wasn't the case. We did get to ask a few more questions of Christine regarding the call back though - and chatted with her while she was waiting for the next group to come in.

So ... now I'll have to wait patiently to see if I get a call back.

Open Casting Call - TODAY!

And I think I'm getting ready to puke - I'm so excited and nervous!!!!

I went to bed at 10pm last night - which is a good thing - because I was able to get 4 1/2 hours of sleep before the main transformer for our neighborhood exploded and sent green flashing lighting into the sky. Talk about the coolest light show around! Hubby and I jumped out of bed - because at first we thought the house next door was on fire. We met the neighbors outside and collectively - through our sleepy minds - determined that the main had blown and that the power would be out for a long time!

That's when I started to panic - no power means no hot water for a shower. No power means no hairdryer. No hairdryer means my hair looks like - well - a scarecrow! I couldn't go to a casting call with scarecrow hair!

I went back to bed at 3am and chanted over and over again - please turn the power on - please turn the power on! I must have fallen asleep - because at 5am I had my second heart attack of the night when the power came back on - and so did the house alarm!

Needless to say I've been awake ever since. First thing I did was jump in the shower and blow dry my hair! Now I just have to sit around wasting time till about 7am. Or until hubby comes back from his reconnaissance mission. Yes - my dear hubby has volunteered to drive over to Universal to see if a line has formed yet. He's the best! He'll call if there's a line - then swing back home to pick me up. If there's no line I won't get to the park until 7:30am. We've been told no one was allowed on property till 8am - so I have to think there's not going to be a line.

So - I know I'm rambling at this point - I'm nervous. But this is going to be so exciting!!! A great experience - and I hope to take lots of photos along the way. I'll post when I get home this afternoon!!!! Right around 11am - send good thoughts my way!

Friday Featured Artist - 01-27-06 - Art

Fred Wilder is an artist from Orange County, CA - or at least that's where I think he's from. It's really hard to tell - considering his BIO is full of questionable details. I came across Fred a few years ago - when I was going through my "I Must Collect Tin Robots from the 1950's" stage.

While Fred's artwork tends to be a bit wilder (get it - haha) than my current tastes, I do love his "Handsome Robot" series - and have in fact purchased several of his works. We're hanging them in the home office - or Pop Culture room as hubby has named it.

You'll find Fred's unique sense of humor throughout his web site - and reflected in his artwork. If you have a few minutes - and aren't easily offended - you should take time to visit the artwork pages on his web site.

Don't forget to sign Fred's guestbook while you are there! He often holds contest around Halloween giving away one of his paintings. Besides, how else are you going to join in the Robot Revolution?

You're Either With Me, Or Against Me

These seven words have done more to separate our country in the past few years than they have to bring us together. Since the President uttered this phrase we have seen an increase in the polarization of thinking in the people of the United States of America.

You are Either With Me - Or Against Me

Think about it? When was your last conversation about local politics? Did it become a heated debate with a clear and distinct polarization of arguments? Did you notice that your fellow debater started toting the party lines more and more? Start reading message boards across the web - you'll find MILLIONS of these arguments taking place on a daily basis. People have become so fixated on the issues of their party - they've forgotten to think for themselves!

We the people have started to attack one another.

You would think that we the people are the terrorists! On this evenings news broadcast I saw a woman beating a school board member over the head with her cane because she felt they were violating the Sunshine Laws. College students storm government meetings demanding that Liberty comes before Security. Studies are showing that campus harassment and crime is on the rise. It goes on and on and on!

Our children are no longer safe in their own schools!

Children are taking guns to school and shooting one another - could this be an extension of the despair we feel as country? A seven year old - SEVEN - took a gun to his daycare center and accidentally shot a classmate. SEVEN! A school in Houston is spending some of their education dollars to put up a fence around the school to deter fights. Four teens in Wisconsin are being charged with hate crimes! A young lady was expelled from her private school simply for kissing a friend.

Polarization leads to public demonstration

President Bush will deliver his State of The Union Address on January 31st. An organization is forming to drown out the message of the Republicans - what they see as lies. World Can't Wait - Drive Out Bush is organizing protests around the country with a goal to drown out the State of The Union Address. They will gather with pots and pans, musical instruments, drums, church bells, and every other noise making device you can think of. At 8pm - one hour before the address - they will make the loudest noise they can to draw attention away from the President - so that their mesage is finally heard! This is a desperate plea to the people of the United States to stop listening to the lies - and start thinking for themselves!

The polarization has to come to an end - if we continue to fight among ourselves - we continue to divide our once very strong country. Remember these key words from our founding fathers:

UNITED WE STAND - DIVIDED WE FALL!!!!

President Bush should remember these words during his Address. They are our only hope.

Open Casting Call - Saturday!

I am doing something totally crazy on Saturday! I've decided to go to an Open Casting call for the NBC show - "The Biggest Loser". I wasn't going to tell anyone which show it was - but honestly - it is so easy to go to the NBC web site and see which reality shows are holding casting calls - it would only take a few minutes for you to figure out.

My husband is keeping things real - reminding me on a daily basis that I have a one in a million chance to fill one of seven openings on the show. But I need to do this! I need to at least attempt to catch the Casting Directors eye. Besides - the entire audition process will make a really cool Blog posting!!!

I'm getting excited and nervous - I couldn't sleep last night. I made the mistake of chatting on TBL message boards for tips on my audition and couldn't stop thinking about possible answers to possible questions. There have been many people who have attended calls in other cities - all willing to share their experience. Apparently they are taking you into the casting director in groups of 10 - 12. You have 6 minutes to make yourself stand out from the group. Some of the questions that have been asked are:

What would your t-shirt slogan be?
How does your weight affect your job?
What do you think of the obesity problem in this country and do you think it can be fixed?
What do you think of how obese people are portrayed on TV?
If you were thin - what would you do?
What is your goal item of clothing?
What makes you unique?

I have a pretty good response for them all - except "What Makes You Unique". This is the same question they ask in job interviews "Why should we hire you"? I have a problem with this because I think more logically - and logically we are pretty much all the same! Any answer I give they have probably heard 100 times. Do I want to throw in the "My husband is a transplant recipient - so I'm unique" option - because really that is what makes HIM unique. Or do I need to sit here for the rest of the week and self analyze myself to see really - what makes me different than anyone else - that might actually be impressive and interesting enough to a television audience!

So - those of you who think you know me - tell me why you think I am unique! And - don't go all mushy with the "you're kind to other people" and "you have inner strength" ... blah blah BLAH! I want something that makes me stand out from everyone else!

Gregory Maguire

I discovered Gregory Maguire a few years ago when his book 'Wicked' first came out. I thought the premise of the story intriguing and decided to give him a chance. The book turned out to be one of the best I have read. So - I bought his other books - 'Mirror Mirror', 'Lost', and 'Confessions of an Ugly Step Sister'. All three of these books were well worth the purchase!

Maguire for the most part is a children's book author. They include 'Seven Spiders Spinning' and 'Leaping Beauty'. His twist on adapting popular fairy tales is rather unique - modernizing the classics to appeal to todays modernized kids! If you're a Fairy Tale fan - as I am - you'll get a good giggle from his childrens books.

Maguire extended his allegory adaptations to the Oz series with 'Wicked'. Basically taking the popular story of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, and twisting it to give us the tale from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West. Readers will find themselves rooting for the infamous villain - and becoming passionate about her cause. The story has enjoyed a return to popularity with its adaptation into a Broadway musical - one of the favorites and a very hard ticket to come by.

A continuation of 'Wicked', is Maguires newest release - 'Son of A Witch'. The story relates the adventures of Liir - a boy who had lived in the castle of the Wicked Witch. His adventures take you through a divided Oz - a political nightmare during the transition of power after the Wizard leaves.

Maguire paints a realistic picture of what life was really like in Oz - and of the struggles each character must face. In 'Son of a Witch' we learn that magic lives within us all - we just need to work hard to find it.

The Bush administration continues to take away our rights to privacy. As I've stated in an earlier blog, if we don't start shouting as a group for this type of government 'Big Brother' mentaility to stop - then Dubbya and his cornies are going to get away with creating a dictarorship. I'm not so sure I want to be told which religion to participate in, and what my morale observations should be.

To participate in the Google Search Protest - simply do a search on these exact terms: "Useless Government Activity" then ask all of your friends and family members to do the same.

Fairy Tales and Today

I'm thinking about writing a children's book. A modern day fairy tale so to speak. It will be about a young girl living with her parents - and her over active imagination. She'll be the true author of the fairy tales - as she relates her adventures in the forest behind her home.

I've actually been thinking about writing a project like this for some time. However - it's not something that really pays the bills. Since I'm still unemployed I thought if I'm going to make an attempt at writing the book - I should take advantage of the time now to do so.

Did I tell you that I heard back from the PBS station? They hired someone else - the other person had been working as a freelancer at the station for a long time apparently. Since everyone knew this other person - they decided to hire them instead of me. Just my luck - and I have not heard back from the two companies I interviewed with before the holidays - so I guess I'm out of luck on all counts.

I'll be searching the want ads and Careerbuilder heavily this week. I also obtained the Book Of Lists from the Business Journal and will be customizing my resume and cover letters to select top companies. Now if I could only figure out exactly what it is I want to do!

Friday Featured Artist - 01-13-06 - Paintings

This weeks Featured Artist is Guy Gondron. I love his landscape paintings from around Central Florida. The painting above is titled "Winter Park" and shows the massive 100 year Oak trees that flourish in that neighborhood.

I worked with Guy for several years, and he's a very talented graphic artist as well. Though his web site only shows his paintings. His works tend be a bit ethereal/surreal - having somewhat of a blurred effect. Guy is a HUGE LOR fan - and you'll find some of his paintings are stylized in that dark, fantasy realm.

The Good Ol' USA - a future Dictatorship?

I just finished a book by JA Jance - 'Edge of Evil'. While a disappointing read - not up to the JA Jance standards I'm used to - the book did have an interesting twist. It was about a female news anchor who kept a blog. In her case, the blog was started when she was fired from her station due to her age. She wanted another forum to write on. But then her friend was murdered and the blog became a means to track the story and leads related to the murder.

The news anchor in the story is stalked by a really bad guy who ends up at her home. Which leads me to the point of my post. The new law signed by President Bush this week. Yes, that's right my blog friends, President Bush signed a bill this week that prohibits anyone from annoying others on the internet without providing thier real name. That means - unless I tell you who I really am - I can't do anything that might annoy you. Criminal penalties include stiff fines and the possibility of two-years in prison.

As usual I can see the benefits and the negatives that go along with this law. It would be helpful on some occasions to know who is really behind the threats and insults. As in the book I've just read, Dyckersonville may have a stalker. We've seen the return of an interesting character who is obsessive over a news anchor close to where he lives. He has made several attempts to determine the true identities of two of the female posters at that forum. It would not surprise me if he finds a way to locate them in real life. In his case - the new law would be very useful. It would be a deterent against a possible stalker - a very good thing. Dyck - if you're reading this you really should log that guys IP address in the event he does do something whacky.

On the negative side of the new law - it's a blatant slam against the First Amendment, our Freedom of Speech and our inherent right to privacy. If we are all made to identify ourselves online - how fast do you think fourms, message boards and blogs will disappear? I'd say pretty much over night. While I don't have much to hide - I won't reveal my true identity here to keep nutcases like our friend on Dyckersonville away from my reality.

The Dubya contigency and the entire Republican party run on the "Less is More" mantra. Meaning, the less government involvement the better. However, during his two terms in office we have seen a steady increase in government regulation - all in the name of terrorism. While this most recent removal of yet another First Amendment right was not in the name of terrorism, it was buried within another bill as if to sneak it under the noses of the American people. Our Freedoms and Protections are being slowly taken away from us by Dubya and his cronies. Keep that in mind during the next election. Pretty soon speaking out against the government will become outlawed - and that my friends is the first step towards a Dictatorship.

Glazed Lemon Daisy Bread

I was cleaning out some storage boxes and came across this recipe. It's a little labor intensive -but the resulting bread is delicious! Light and fluffy and just yummy! I thought I'd share it here.

Glazed Lemon Daisy Bread

Dough:
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup milk
1/4 ounce package active dry yeast
4 1/4 to 4 3/4 cups all purpose flour
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon vanilla

Filling:
1/4 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

Glaze:
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 tablespoons lemon juice

In 1 qt. saucepan combine 1/2 caup sugar, w/2 cup butter and milk. Cook over medium heat until butter is melted (3 to 5 minutes). Pour into large mixing bowl and cool to 110F. Stir in yeast until disolved. Add 3 cups flour and remaining dough ingredients, stir until well mixed. Stir in remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time until a soft dough forms. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and kead until smooth and elastic (3 to 5 minutes). Place doug in greased bowl; turn to coat dough. Cover and let rise in a warm location until doubled in size. (1 to 1 1/2 hours). Dough is ready if indention remains when touched.

Punch down dough; let rest 10 minutes. On lightly floured surface roll dough into an 18" circle. Spread with softened 1/4 cup butter and sprinkle with cloves. Place a beverage tumbler in the center of the dough, make 4 cuts at equal intervals from outside of circle to beverage tumbler. Cut each wedge into 5 wedges (you'll have a total of 20 wedges). Twist every two wedges together, pinch ends of twists together. Coil twists towards the center, making a daisy design. Remove tumbler, coiling one twist for the center.

Place onto a greased cookie sheet; reshape design as needed. Cover; let rise 45 minutes. Heat oven fot 350F. Bake for 20 - 30 minutes or until golden brown. Meanwhile, in small bowl mix together all ingredients for glaze until smooth. Pour glaze over warm bread.

Homemade Candy

Today I have invited my niece (7) and nephew(4) over for a special Double Feature of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - old and new! To commemorate the occasion I woke up at 7am to take a bash at creating my very own brand of Homemade Hard Candy. As I type this - batch number one (the test batch) is cooling in the kitchen.

I purchased special candy flavorings while in PA over the holidays - it came in a variety of tempting flavors - but I opted for the tradition: butterscotch, peppermint and cinnamon. And just to be exotic I also picked up pineapple flavoring - as this is my favorite flavor of Life Saver.

If this batch of candy turns out any good - I may be in the candy making business! It's relatively easy to make Hard Candy. Here's the basic recipe:

3 3/4 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups light corn syrup
1 cup water
2 tsp. flavoring
your favorite food coloring

Basically - you bring the mixture up to 260F (using your handy dandy candy thermometer) - then add the coloring. DO NOT STIR - the boiling action will mix the color in for you. Then - when the candy reaches 300F - remove from heat and stir in the flavoring. Transfer candy mixture to greased cookie sheet. Then when it's all cool you smash it into a bunch of yummy pieces!

If you're a pro - you'd have candy molds, etc .... But since this is my first batch I'm doing things the primitive way.

So - the first batch is butterscotch flavored. I put in blue and red food coloring (to make Willie Wonka Purple - of course). It's now cooling and almost ready to smash into pieces. The whole house smells like butter and scotch - which is a good thing! Too bad I really shouldn't be tasting any of it - but I will sacrifice the diet to ensure quality control of the product. I'll let you know if it turned out - or if I had to throw the whole lot in the trash.

While driving home from the grocery store this afternoon - I heard this beautiful - sad song. The voice was so unique and just fit the blue mood I'm in right now. The song is called "You're Beautifu l" and it speaks about a man falling in love with a woman he's seen across the subway - but has no hope of ever seeing again.

Reading James' biography at his website, I saw that our British family history was somewhat the same. We both come from a long line of warriors - and have broken away from this family tradition to explore our creative sides. You have to read his bio - this guy has a tremendous sense of humor about himself. Another reason why I selected him as my first featured artist. {And he's cute to boot!}

I know most critics get into the sad undertones and the haunting melodies - though true - I won't go there. I don't dare pretend I know enough about music to criticize technique. And I've really only heard the one song all the way through - the rest I've just heard clips. All I know is that this song moved me - it made me rush home to jump online and figure out who this guy was!

The Job Search Continues

It's been awhile since my last update on the job search. I know many of you don't care - but I needed to post something on the blog to keep you coming back for more! Let's see .... it's been 20 weeks since I stepped down from my position as Director of Marketing & Sales at the golf course. I have sent out 77 resumes, had 7 interviews and ZERO offers of employment.

My most recent interview was two days ago with the local PBS station as their Marketing Coordinator. A step down from my manager experience - but it's a job back in television so I'm not going to complain. {well - the pay sucks - I can complain about that}. The interview went well - like all of the others. It's getting really hard for me to work up the enthusiasm required when recruiters say "We'll let you know our decision next week." I'm learning what that really means is "We liked you - but not enough to hire you." The number of times I've been called back by a recruiter with a decision is ZERO. I've had to send out numerous follow-up e-mails to find out the position was given to "someone whose qualifications best matched the position."

So - I'm doing my best to be optimistic about the PBS station job. Looking at their EOO report online - they have a history of only interviewing 2-3 candidates for each job. Which is a PLUS for me. Heck - if they can find one other person who's qualifications are better than mine - then by all means give them the job! It only pays $27,000 a year anyways.

I'm still keeping hope for the two jobs I interviewed for prior to the holidays as well - sending out my special follow-up e-mail today. I'm hoping to hear back that they are making their decisions this week. The job I REALLY want {if I can only choose from the 3 most recent interviews} is at a posh country club in membership sales. The salary was $35,000 - but the current membership director is earning $1,000 per week in commissions. That's an extra $52,000 a year! SWEEEEEEEEETTTTT! Sure - it's a sales job - but for that kind of money I'd grow to like sales. The third job is with the local transportation company - in business development. What that means - is that it would be my job to convince the bigger companies within the area to purchase pre-tax vouchers for bussing to give out/sell to their employees. Since I have little sales experience, I have mixed feelings about this job. It would be stable - and it pays really well ($50,000) - but I'm not sure I'll like the job.

I sort of made the decision a few days ago to just take the job with the most money - if offered all three positions. To just suck-it-up and do the job as best I could regardless of whether or not I liked it. But, I'm starting to doubt that decision. Is it more important to make tons of money - or to love what you're doing. Out of the three jobs I'd probably enjoy the PBS job the best - but it pays the least. {Which is exactly how my world works - its just not fair}

Keep your fingers crossed for me! The unemployment checks will stop in 6 weeks - so I need to find a job before that happens! Otherwise I'll have to sling burgers or hock clothes at the mall! Ah!

Today I have been told that my Uncle is dieing from Cancer of the Pleura. He's been in the hospital for several days being treated for what they thought was a case of Pleurisy. However - they discovered today that the Pleura was completely covered in cancer. They'll be taking him off the ventilator sometime today and he'll find his way into the arms of the angels.

My Uncle was a brilliant man - when I say this I mean that he just shone whenever I saw him. His personality was larger than life and I will always remember him smiling. Living in England, we didn't get to visit him as often as we would have liked. But he was always at our sides during important occasions in our lives. I think he would be amused to discover his ailment came straight from one of his favorite comedians songs.

My Uncle was a member of the Royal Guard at Buckingham Palace many moons ago. As a kid I thought this was the coolest job ever! He got to wear one of those big fuzzy hats, and was able to stand perfectly still even when people did their best to make them laugh. From there he moved on to become a Detective at Scotland Yard. He was my very own personal super hero - defender and crime fighter. A modern version of our warrior ancestors - well known in our family history.

My most recent memories of my uncle are from my own wedding. This was the last time that I saw him - and that was 9 years ago. He and my Captain-in-law got along very well - splitting a bottle of my father-in-laws best whiskey. I'm told they had a very good time - and my dad had to trick him with a bottle of O'Douls to get him away from the hotel bar afterwards.

My mother and aunt - sisters to my uncle - were able to spend a long vacation with him this past year. He had always wanted to see the Grand Canyon - and his wife was able to surprise him on his 70th birthday. My uncle flew to my aunt's home in Colorado - where my mom met them. They drive down through the grand canyon - making stops along the way - and then back home via Las Vegas. They had the time of their lives. I am so glad they were able to spend that time together.

My Aunt Anne - my uncles first wife - died of breast cancer when I was very young. I have always envisioned her as an angel watching over us all. I know she's watching over my uncle and his family now. I'll miss you, my Super Uncle.

What Is Pleurisy?

Pleurisy, also called pleuritis, is an inflammation of the pleura, which is the moist, double-layered membrane that surrounds the lungs and lines the rib cage. The condition can make breathing extremely painful, and sometimes it is associated with another condition called pleural effusion where excess fluid fills the area between the membrane's layers.

What Causes It?

Viral infection is probably the most common cause of pleurisy. Other diseases that can cause pleurisy are lung infections, such as pneumonia and tuberculosis, and other diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, liver and kidney disease, heart failure and pulmonary embolism. Other causes include chest injuries and drug reactions.

Obsession

Now, I have found that there is an obsessive tendency that runs in my family. While I won't go into details in order to protect the not-so-innocent, I will point out that I have witnessed these obsessive behaviors first hand. I am wondering if I should start research on finding the gene that creates this type of behavior - I could become rich and famous! But I lack the scientific knowledge to launch such a study - so I'll have to be content with observing behavioral patterns and noting occurrences of obsession.

I'd have to begin with myself. Yes - I tend to be obsessive on many things. I love to eat good food - as is evident in my stature. I love to bake - it's become one of my passions. I absolutely love to shop - get me in the mall with a credit card and I'm the happiest person on the face of the earth! Many of you have witnessed my obsession over Bono, the lead singer of the group U2, and the one person capable of saving the world! {my hero!}.

I have a new obsession. It's a PC game that should have come with some sort of warning label! Right on the front of the package -in big red letters - it should read

WARNING: THIS GAME MAY CAUSE ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR

It's a new PC game called simply, "The Movies."

I received the game on Christmas, and wasn't able to begin playing it until we returned home from Lake Carey, PA. In the past 5 days I've played the game over 30 hours. YES! I already admitted to being addicted! I just can't stop myself! I have not watched TV at night in the past 5 days. I have not seen the news in the past 5 days. I have no idea what's going on in the outside world - because I"ve been playing this silly PC game! It must stop!

But I can't stop. You see - I can create my own little movie studio. I can even create my own actors and directors - pick every feature and characteristic I desire. It's my way of controlling Hollywood! It's FANTASTIC! So far I've only created one actor and one director. Myself as the director, and of course, Bono as the actor. Yes - silly - I know. But it was the first character that came to mind when I was testing the Star Maker feature.

I've run through the tutorial and learned the basics of the game. I've begun my own studio from the ground up - starting in 1920. As each year goes by I can add new buildings, and create movies in all kinds of genres. As I gain more experience I can even write my own scripts, direct the filming, and edit the movie in post-production! Did I mention that this game is FANTASTIC!

I'm making an effort to force myself off the computer this next week - to take my mind off the game. I have a ton of projects planned around the house and I have another interview on Wednesday. Let's hope I don't mix-up reality with the game during the interview - and say "Oh yes - I have directing and production experience - I've developed 35 short films." LOL - that would be a hoot!

I think I'll play for another hour before I sign off for the week. So - who wants to become the next Super-Star in my game??

New Years Resolution

In a perfect world there would be no losers. We’d all be able to walk down the street without a second glance. People would treat each other with equal respect and tolerance. Our children would be happy and secure in knowing it’s who you are that counts – not what you look like. But we don’t live in a perfect world – nor are any of us truly perfect people.

Growing up I was always told – “you’d be so pretty if you just lost a little weight.” Didn’t they know that I was already pretty? What a beautiful person I was in my heart? I think ever since then I’ve been self conscious of who I am – always doubting myself and I don’t want to do that anymore! I’m a strong person – I am intelligent – and damn it I am beautiful!

When I was 27 my doctors finally diagnosed me with hypothyroidism. Finally – a reason for the slow metabolism and overall sluggish feelings I’d been living with so long! But – it’s been ten years since then and I’m tired of this battle over my weight. I can keep blaming bad genetics for my problem, keep wallowing in self pity and eating to cover the pain. Or I can do something to change it all – to take that giant step and commit to getting fit for life.

I’m at a time in my life where I’m not working. Not by choice – trust me - I’ve applied to almost 100 employers in the past three months. I’ve had 7 face-to-face interviews of which I’ve been more than qualified. But you can see it in their eyes when you walk into the room. THIS thing wants to work in marketing? This person can’t represent the image I want for my company. I’m almost dismissed immediately as a person of intelligence or one who could offer anything of importance to a company. Since I’m not working for the first time in forever – I have the time to take off to dedicate to improving ME!

I’m a creative person – relatively smart – and I actually love to do research. I’m married to a man surviving Cystic Fibrosis and the many issues that come along with that disease. I’m the mother of a 15 year old son – what a truly wonderful person he is becoming! I’ve been fighting obesity for 15 years – and it is time to win the war! When I’m finished – forget becoming Donald Trump's next Apprentice! I'm going to take over the world!

Snuggly Warmth - Electric Blankets!

I have returned from the Frozen North! We had a relaxing vacation at the mother-in-laws cottage - and had fun playing in the snow. But I am so very glad to be back home! It's funny - you look forward to spending time outside your normal environment and crave that vacation time. Yet, when you get to your vacation destination you end up craving home.

Hubby Hush has pneumonia. It's not so serious he's in the hospital - but it is a big worry. He spent most of our vacation trying to catch his breath. {He's picking up the dog and cat from my father-in-law this morning - then he's off to the doctor once again!} He was unable to get very much sleep on our trip and I think this might be one reason we were eager to return home. I sure slept 100% better last night in my own bed!!!

Now I have all of the vacation laundry to contend with. My son will sleep until noon I am sure - we didn't get home till 1:30am and he was still awake when I got to bed at 2am. But - he will be forced into labor to help me get all the laundry done by the end of the day. I don't mind doing laundry - ten times better than cleaning the house - it is just a full day event after vacation and I'm not looking forward to it. I also have to go grocery shopping - there's no real food in the house. I really shouldn't spend too much time here! Oh yeah - and I have to return a call about an interview with the local PBS station - which would be fantastic if I got that job and returned to TV!!!

But before I go - let me rant about the pleasures of an electric blanket. The cottage is over 100 years old - and the heating isn't the best. Add on the exuberant cost of heating oil this year and the thermostat was set at 65 degrees at night. To this Floridian that is just too darn cold! Yet I always looked forward to crawling under the blankets at night - because we had an electric blanket!! That thing keeps you nice and toasty warm! I was so snuggly I didn't want to get out of bed in the morning. I'm seriously thinking of investing in one for our bed. This way hubby can keep the thermostat as low as he wants and it won't matter! I'll be warm! I highly recommend everyone run out today and buy an electric blanket.

Loved the Consti-Who-tion a lot.
But the O'Reilly, who lived up in Fox-ville, Did NOT!

The O'Reilly DETESTED the Who Consti-Who-tion, He thought it was some sort of liberal pollution.
Now, please don't ask why, for I really don't know.
Perhaps it had something to do with his show.
It could be that his head wasn't screwed on quite right.
Or it could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all May have been that his RATINGS Were two sizes too small.

Well, whatever it was, bad ratings or tight shoes, He stood there one Christmas, just hating the Whos.
"They're so multicultural," he sneered, "and wherever they're from, They lack the good sense to just launch a pogrom!
There's no Who ethnic cleansing, no Who Inquisition, If this PEACE can't be stopped, I may lose my position.
Those sensitive, tolerant Whos! It's quite grating.
I must think of something to fix my show's ratings!"
Then he said with a smirk, "I know just what to do To destroy all the joy in the land of the Who!

I think I can end that PC Who peace.

Time Man Of The Year 2005

They couldn't have picked a more deserving person to honor!

Since posting this at Medialine.com, I've received some pretty negative feedback on the Gates and Bono being named Persons of The Year by Time magazine.

I'm not going to step up onto my soap box and defend Bono and his work. That is what you all expect - and I'm not going to do it. I'd be preaching to those who have already made up their minds. And there is pretty much nothing you could say at this point that would change mine. That would be a fruitless argument - and not worth the time.

But I have to ask - before you criticize others for the work they have done - what it is that you have done to make a positive change in the world? Either in your local community or on a more global basis. And I'm talking about doing something much more than writing a check for the cause.

Until you can tell us that you've done as much as you could to make a positive impact - you can not criticize.

Bono and The Gates have stepped above their wealth and notoriety to do something good. Every other major event this year seemed to have pulled us apart as people – these humanitarian efforts seem to be the only attempt at bringing the world together. And that is worthy of Persons Of The Year status in my opinion.

Ford Reverses Decision

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday said it will run advertisements in gay publications, reversing a decision last week to pull all advertising of its Jaguar and Land Rover luxury brands from that sector.

In a letter to some gay, lesbian and human rights groups, Ford said it has decided to run corporate ads for all its eight brands, including its Jaguar and Land Rover luxury brands, in the targeted publications.

"It is my hope that this will remove any ambiguity about Ford's desire to advertise to all important audiences and put this particular issue behind us," Joe Laymon, Ford's group vice president for corporate human resources, wrote in the letter, which was posted on Ford's web site.

It has come to our attention that Ford Motor Co. recently engaged in talks with the conservative group the American Family Association (AFA), and as a consequence of these meetings, agreed to withdraw advertising dollars from publications that cater to gay and lesbian people. Although Ford’s current position is that the ad cuts were a result of cost cutting, it smacks of bigotry, discrimination, and exclusion, and achieved exactly what the AFA was looking for. A Florida Girl Treks to The Great North

As some of you know, my family and I will be traveling to the Frozen North for the holidays next week. We'll be visiting my mother-in-law in a little town called Lake Carey - close to Tunkhannock, PA. This morning mom-in-law sent an e-mail to Hubby Hush letting us know that the temperature had just dropped to 8 degrees.

Was that 8 degrees Fahrenheit - I asked.

Yes - 8 degrees Fahrenheit.

But that's below freezing, I said.

Yes - that is below freezing I was told.

So I am now in a panic. Sure - I wanted to bring my son up North for Christmas. He's 15 years old and has NEVER seen snow. I thought it was about time for him to experience a White Christmas. Of course - I never thought that the temperatures would have to fall below freezing in order for it to snow!

Now, before you go calling me a 'sissy' and 'wimp' for fretting over the temperature - let me explain. I grew up in Scotland. I should be used to the cold - and I know that playing in the snow is a lot of fun! But that was over 25 years ago! I am now an official Floridian - if the temperature drops below 40 we pull out our heavy sweaters and our winter coats. We celebrate when the mercury hits 35 degrees because that means we can show off our favorite "winter" attire that day at the office. But it only stays that cold in the morning - and only for one or two days!

Not only am I now a Floridian - I also suffer from an auto-immune disease called hypothyroidism. There are many symptoms - but the main symptom that I suffer from every year is an intolerance to cold temperatures. Last night the temp inside the house fell to 71. My nose was so cold I thought it was going to fall off! I was almost in tears as I was watching television because I couldn't warm up.

How am I going to survive 7 days in Lake Carey, PA if the temps don't warm up past 20 degrees?!?!?!

Favorite Holiday Music

My favorite Holiday music is performed by Transiberian Orchestra. They are fantastic - and really make Christmas in Florida seem like Christmas!

Hubby Hush and I have named this our favorite song from this year: Christmas Cannon Rock
from their "The Lost Christmas Eve" CD. The clip doesn't do it justice - the full version is much better. Wizards In Winter is pretty good as well.

I think I'll run over to Target and buy the CD! See ya!

Creationism vs. Evolution - Why Not Both?

After reading Dan Brown's 'Angels & Demons' this very thought came to my mind. Why couldn't there be both a religious AND scientific explanation to the formation of the universe and life?

In Brown's book, the Big Bang theory is explained as a tremendous force of energy coming together to form all life. This 'force' was thought to be the engery of God. And then, after the Big Bang the forces of evolution took over and we developed into humans per Darwin's explanation.

It sounds plaussible. To date there is no other explanation for the Big Bang - so why not a force of energy so powerful it could only come from a higher being?

Let me explain myself - because often times my views may seem to conflict. This may be because I am fascinated over the study of cultural tradition, mythology, religion, and basic every day life. I keep an open mind to everything - because I can see the possibility in all the theories.

If you had to put a label on my "religion" I think the best way to describe it would be "LOVE". I feel the forces that guide us comes more from within than from above. I don't feel one religion should be seen as "the one true religion".

As I said in another post - I have a tremendous respect for religious leaders. That they have given up their own lives to assit others is the ultimate sacrafice - and they should be held in the highest regard.

This however does not mean I will always agree with religious people - or people with fundamentalist ideals. ANYONE who does ANYTHING to the extreme - should be approached with a great deal of caution. It's not because of their relgion - it's because they are so closed to any idea outside their own belief that they endanger the free thought of others.

I know I'm rambling ... but I wanted you to know where I'm coming from. You may see me argue against religious ideals - but it not because I hate religious people. It's because I don't see the theory as being plausible based on my own experience and studies.

There will be other times you'll see me agree with some religious ideals. Because I believe in mankind - and the goodness that is out there. I have hope for a peaceful world - and the morales that religion teaches will lead us in the right direction.

And there will be times where I make fun of religion. For example - when I posted pictures of the "fish" emblems for the back of my car. Those darn "Fish" emblems make me giggle!

When It Comes To The End

A little morbid - yes - but someone on Medialine mentioned planning for your own demise and it made me think.

I want to be cremated when I die. And I want my ashes spread over a field of wildflowers in Scotland. Perhaps close to a stream. And I want music to be playing when you do it. Bagpipes and a U2 song.

And everything I own should be passed on to my son.

That's it. Pretty simple - but that's what I want.

Women vs. Fairy Tales

In response to the question: "Don't fairy tales belittle women?"

There are so many fairy tales that show the strength of girls as well. They are mostly coming of age stories. Not all of them are about fairy princesses and the knights that come to save them.

Hans Christian Anderson and Aesops fables are both examples of fairy tales that teach valuable life lessons. Mother Goose too offers a whimisical outlook on life.

The Brothers Grimm tend to be more gender biased. But if you take a look at the stories it is often a wicked parent that takes advantage of the girls in the stories. Perhaps showing a strange obsession the Brothers had towards their own mother? If you read the original Grimm version of Cinderella you'd be shocked at how different it is from the modern Disney version.

One of my modern favorites is Fern Gully - where Krista saves the fairy kingdom when she discovers her own inner powers.

Gregory Maguire has written some fantastic books around popular fairy tales - giving you a completly different view on the events surrounding the heroins. Of course, the most popular being "Wicked" - fabulous look at the Wizard of Oz from the Wicked Witches point of view.

Folk Lore and Myth - non-traditional fairy tales - show a great deal of strength in women. Greek Mythology shows a good balance between the Gods and the Goddesses. In these ancient stories women are sometimes held in higher regard than the men {AS THEY SHOULD BE} - it makes you wonder what happened in our world to make a more matriarchal society shift towards a more patriarchal society? Could it maybe be the invent of Christianity? I dunno ... seems to be around that same time period when women started to take a lesser role in history and in writings.

The Santa Claus Myth

Someone at medialine asked a question that typically comes up this time of year - should you share the myth of Santa Claus with your children? Or would that be committing the ultimate lie?

Well .. it all comes down to whether or not you want to introduce Magic and Fairy Tales into the life of your kids. Do you want them to believe in the impossible? That anything at all could happen? That your imagination can be a wonderful tool?

I believe Fairy Tales are an essential part of the lives of children. You teach them to believe in the impossible and that anything could happen - to keep their minds open. Kids develop an imaginative and creative mind when we allow them to dream of the impossible. And the legend of Santa Claus is a very important part of that creative development.

How you tell a child the truth - and when - is the key issue. Personally I didn't know for sure until I was 11 years old. While I kind of knew - it wasn't until friends confirmed that my parents purchased the gifts that I knew for sure. Today - I still believe in the Magic of the Santa Claus legend.

My own son was 6 or 7 years old when he found out about Santa. It was actually quiet funny-really. He had been asking alot about Santa that year - and we kept encouraging him to believe knowing it would be his last year. Then one day he happened to stumble across the stash of presents in our hiding spot. He started jumping up and down screaming - I knew it was you! I knew it was you! Almost proud of himself for figuring out the mystery behind the gifts.

This is when I sat him down and reminded him that other kids still believed in Santa - that he needed to keep the mystery to himself. I also told him the story of St. Nick, and that Santa Claus was really the spirit of the holiday and the love we hold for our friends and families deep within our hearts. So, Santa is still Magical for us because he represents love.

I don't see this as lieing. You're sharing a popular tradition of our culture - a myth so to speak. One that teaches kids to believe in the impossible - and that love is what truly matters during the holidays.

St. Nicholas was a real life person - who gave gifts in secrecy to children. You are continuing the work of St. Nick by offering gifts to your own children each year. It is a continuation of tradition - just as is the Christmas Tree. It is without these traditions that our society begins to lose itself. IF we do not honor the customs of our society - what will our children be left with? Perhaps some of our morale issues have stemmed from the lack of caring for these traditions? Kids have been left with no sense of continuity - and have no hope for their own futures. By sharing customs passed on from generation to generation you give children a sense of their own ancestral history. They are following the same rituals their grandparents did - their great grandparents - and many other generations before them. The kids develop a true sense of family - a sense of who they are, where they come from, and a good idea of where they are expected to go.

If you do decide to not share the Santa tradition with your kids - be sure to form some sort of family tradition with them. Something that they can pass along to their own children.

Organ Donation Awareness Advocay

Today marks the 14 year anniversary of my husbands double lung transplant. A HUGE thank you goes out to anyone and everyone who has registered as an Organ Donor.

Every 16 minutes another person is added to the national organ transplant waiting list. Over 88,000 people are currently waiting for a new organ. 12 people will die each day while waiting on the list. Even though one donor can help up to 50 people, only 27,000 transplants were given in 2004. It is evident that the need for organ transplants continues to exceed the availability of organs.
